New Scientist App Reviews

Only so-so

The magazine works ok while online. However, when offline almost none of the links work because the content is not included in the saved copy on the iPad. Sorry, but I would expect that the digital copy of the magazine include the New Scientist context at the least. I would also expect that third party content be licensed to be included with the digital version as well.

Good app

Vast improvement over Zinio Easy to read online or not, easy to manage storage

Outstanding

As in much better than the print version. Why? Because all the references within articles are hyper-links, taking me to the original research papers.

Not an app...

This is not an app. It is only viewable if you pay for subscription and use newsstand.

Worthless

I subscribe to the print edition for 150 dollars per year which gives me access to the web edition. So why pay more for this app?

Not too hot, not too cold, just right

New Scientist content is sharp. Its up-to-date and achieves a great balance of intelligent explanation and hand-holding. Enjoyable and valuable content.

Not nearly as nice a read as the print version or even Zinio

I used to read the print version which was very nice. Great format. Thoughtful layout. Restful on the eyes while I lay on the couch. The app loses all that. Makes it just like browsing a bunch of random articles on a website. The Newsstand version also doesnt include the intro page from the editor. I liked that page a lot! The Zinio version was much better. If I can I will switch back to Zinio. It looks like the magazine! The Zinio version also allows emailing a text version of the complete article whereas the Newsstand version only sends you to the link on the web and it may only give you the first paragraph or two.

Cant recover from failed downloads

I just got the app and Ive tried to download an issue six or seven times without success. It gets perhaps halfway through then fails and has to start over which is, technically, incredibly naive ... why doesnt the download resume from where it failed?

Better than Print

Well organized and good graphics.

Fun interesting

New scientist magazine is the perfect source for the academic writer. It is a challenging read. Great and non biased news reports!

Very good...

... The only thing I can think I would be nice to include would be a search option that covers all dates and issues. Similar to the websites.

Love the Magazine

After a few years of being teased by their emails, I subscribed. I love the mag, and I was pleasantly surprised that I could access back issues, too. Great stuff here.

Superior readability and interactivity

Brilliant content combined with a slick, intuitive and easily navigable interface.

Definitely worth the plunge

For years i was a print subscriber, always enjoying my weekly science fix. The only downside (besides the inevitable cost) was the overhead in the ever-growing stockpile of printed matter i had to get through. I took a crack at using the Zinio version (the print version delivered as what is likely a PDF), but even on the iPad the reading experience was awkward, and on my mobile it was a pain. Besides sidestepping Apples complex and poorly-managed subscription system, this app gives you a mobile-optimised view that isnt crap (its different than the print version, but you quickly get used to it), with hyperlinked content... and all at close to half the price of either print or Zinio. Plus, i can take as long as i want to work through my backlog of partially-read issues :P

Just right

Just enough coverage to keep up with ongoing developments across many fields, along with leads for further follow-up where desired--"New Scientist" is my favorite overview of the sciences.

App quit working

I have been a New Scientist subscriber for awhile and had previously used this app with success to download my issues, but it has suddenly stopped working with the November 14th issue. I contacted them through the chat feature of the website on Friday, 15 November, and the matter was referred somewhere else. I still have no access (it is now the 19th), and have had no word from New Scientist (re-contacting the chat provided no answer). So I have to say that this app is currently non-functional (at least for me), so I advise everyone to BEWARE.

The worst app for the best magazine

Dont get me wrong. New Scientist magazine is the best read. Informative, fascinating, amusing, and mind-blowing. But this app is just plain bad. Let me list the ways. 1. No place saving in an issue. Close the app, and where were you? Hope you remembered... 2. Doesnt save subscription information, so you have to log in again for each new issue. 3. No ability to delete individual issues. Are you kidding me? 4. Table of contents is by category, and not sequential. Very confusing. 5. Not organized in same order as print edition. Did anyone show this to the production editor? 6. Sometimes, new issues just dont appear. Please. Hire a better developer.

No Complaints, New Scientist is a Great Read

The app works well. Nothing to write about of significance. I very much enjoy the magazine, which is why I got the app in the first place. Updated: 12/3/14 The app continues to work as advertised. I would like it to be easier to share articles with friends, but this is a minor concern.
